As coaching grows ever-more popular, it’s hardly surprising that the demands for regulation get ever-louder. Of course, the unwary and the unsuspecting must be protected from the unscrupulous - and yet if coaching is to stand the long term test of time, it’s the market place which will dictate its future - not the regulating bodies.
As a discipline, coaching is future-based and results oriented. So far, so good. And yet when it comes to proving just how powerful coaching can be, there seems to be little agreement in the best way to go about it.

True love does not come by finding the perfect person, but by learning to see an imperfect person perfectly. - Jason Jordan
I heard a story about two friends, both women in their early thirties, each one single but desperate to find a partner, get married, settle down and start a family. However, they have each agreed to set conditions on finding their Mr. Right: He must own his own house, drive his own car, hold down a professional job and have bags of money stashed away for rainy days.

I can only think of two things that are not negotiable and they are death and taxes. Other than that everything else is up for grabs. The fact that everything is negotiable doesn’t mean you will get everything just the way you want it. What it does mean is you can at least ask for what you want.
My husband had an unfortunate car accident. He was waiting his turn to make a left-hand turn, and a woman in the van in front of him decided to back up. She didn’t notice my husband behind her. Her foot slipped and she stomped on the accelerator. The van smashed into our car. The good news is my husband is fine. The bad news is the car is totaled.

What are you doing? I mean it. What are you doing and why?
Are you just doing what you think will get you ahead in life? Out of your current stuck rut?
Everybody breathe…again, and deeper. Now one more time…
I used to hate it when therapists, coaches, yoga teachers etc. would do all these breathing exercises during my time with them. “What a waste” I used to think…can’t we just “Get on with things, I have a lot to do/discuss/process etc.”

Managing professionals has been compared to herding cats and, as all cat owners now, cats are officially un-herdable. However, skilled animals trainers know that cats can be trained, if perhaps not herded, to an extent that amazes those unfamiliar with the methods. Can it work with professionals too?
You do have to work with the temperament of the cat.
Cats do not respond to “negative reinforcement” or punishment. This includes being put on a lead, being ordered around, being shouted at and being subjected to any kind of: “do this or else . . .” approach.
