A League Of His Own

April 4th, 2008 by LoadRunner

When Carmelo Anthony first came into the league in 2003, he was considered to be a good small forward. At 6’ 8, he has the size and the strength to play effectively. However, his name was behind players such as Lebron James and Wade. Carmelo had previously led the Orangemen to the NCAA title with a double-double. Drafted by the Denver Nuggets, Carmelo looked as if was going to make an impact. In his rookie year, he averaged about 20 points and 5 rebounds. He finished behind Lebron James for the rookie of the year award. However, players such as Chris Bosh were making vast improvements.

Carmelo had disappointing second and third years, not playing to his potential. It was clear now that he was not as good as Lebron James and Wade. Some questioned his ability to play and people’s opinion’s about him changed. The value of his merchandise fell and his team was not doing well. Carmelo had to do something if he was to remain in the race.

Carmelo responded well to the wave of criticism he was receiving. Carmelo worked harder during the off-season and was ready to make a splash. He averaged around 30 points per game and was relentless. He would put on scoring sprees that would last, something that was not certain in his pervious years. He also had the team in a good position for the playoffs. However, a brawl occurred when a fight occurred between the Knicks. Carmelo threw a clean shot and was suspended for many games. It appeared as if he was going to throw away his season. The team responded by trading for Allen Iverson, star shooting guard for the Sixers. The team looked to have an impressive tandem, two of the best pure scorers in the NBA. It is probably one of few times that the top two scorers in the league on the same team. He would still manage to finish strong, averaging about 29 points per game.

It appears as if Carmelo has found motivation in his draft class. Having received a lack of respect from the people around him, he decided to prove that he was good and capable. Now many people respect him and find that he can bring motivation in their own lives. He is ready to play next year and may have an even better year.
